Spiegelberg taught religious studies and other courses in Asian studies at Stanford from 1941 until his retirement in 1960. He was voted a "great teacher" by the Student Executive Committee in 1950. Born in Germany, he obtained his doctorate at Tubingen in 1922 and a theological degree from the German Lutheran Church in 1925; in 1937 he escaped Nazi Germany with the help of Paul Tillich.
